This is Road Notes, and today we’ll take apart one of the most stubborn car myths: that car rental is always a lifesaver for your wallet, while owning a car is pure financial ruin.
Like, you grab a daily car rental in Lviv or Kyiv for pennies — and drive like a king, with none of the headaches about maintenance, insurance, and “oh, where am I going to park this?”.
Sounds great. Almost like a carsharing ad. But let’s be honest — with a calculator and a bit of healthy skepticism.
Where the myth lies — and the car owner actually wins
Let’s do the math fairly (figures roughly for 2026 in Ukraine).
Your own car (budget or mid-range, 15–20k km per year):
Buying it (even on a loan) is a one-time hit to the budget.
But after that: fuel, maintenance, minor repairs, tires, mandatory third-party insurance, parking, car washes.
Real cost of ownership — from 4,000 to 10,000 UAH per month (depending on the model and driving style).
Over a year that’s 50–120k UAH, not counting depreciation.
Now imagine you drive every day. To work, to the store, to the country house, to another city.
Daily car rental at $15–40 (in Kyiv and Lviv that’s the average rate for a decent car) quickly turns into a very noticeable amount.
If you count a full month:
Cheap car rental in Kyiv — from $15–25 per day for a long rental period.
For 30 days that easily becomes $450–750 (about 18,000–30,000 UAH).
Plus a deposit, mileage limits at some companies, the risk of extra charges for scratches.
And every time you have to think: “What if the car is booked today, or they give me some beat-up wreck?”
A car owner wins in the following cases (and these are big плюсы):
Constant daily use — your own car pays off in as little as 2–3 years compared to daily car rental.
You can go anywhere and as much as you want (without km limits from most rental companies).
The car is always “yours” — with your mats, seat settings, favorite music, and the smell of your “native” air freshener.
No risk that at the right moment all decent cars in Kyiv car rental or Lviv will be snapped up by tourists.
Long-term depreciation and the option to sell the car later (at least some of the money comes back).
In short, if you genuinely live with a car — and not just “drive sometimes” — ownership is almost always cheaper.
The “car rental is cheaper” myth works only in the heads of people who look only at the daily rate and forget to multiply by 365.
And here’s where car rental is actually useful — and can be cheaper
But! Don’t rush to label me a hardcore defender of car loans. There are situations where car rental is simply a celebration for both your brain and your wallet.
It’s profitable to rent a car when:
Short trips — for a weekend, vacation, business trip, friends’ wedding, or “a ride through the Carpathians”.
Daily car rental for 3–7 days is often cheaper than maintaining your own car just for these rare moments.
Traveling to another city — you fly to Lviv, grab a Lviv car rental, and go exploring. No need to drive your own car 500+ km and then worry about getting back.
Test drive before buying — want to understand whether you really need that exact crossover? Take a car rental for a couple of days and test it properly.
Seasonal needs — in winter you don’t want to mess with summer tires and fight snow; in summer — the other way around. Or when your car is in the shop.
No desire to deal with the hassle — no maintenance, insurance, searching for overnight parking, fear of theft, or “what if the battery dies”. You take a cheap car rental, drive, return it, and you’re free.
Business or occasional guests — partners arrive, you need a presentable car for a day or two — Kyiv car rental solves it without a headache.
In these cases car rental really can be both more profitable and more pleasant. Especially if you choose reliable services with good insurance and transparent terms.
In the end, the myth that car rental is always cheaper than ownership is like the story about “cheap gas at grandma’s station”.
Sometimes it’s true, but more often it’s a pretty fairy tale for those who don’t like doing the math.
The car owner wins over the long distance if a car is needed every day.
Car rental wins when you just need “a drive” without obligations and extra headaches.
The smartest approach is a hybrid.
