Where to go from Lviv by car for one day

Lviv is convenient to use as a starting point for traveling around western Ukraine. Just an hour to an hour and a half after leaving the city, you can find yourself near an ancient castle, in a small historic town, or among the Carpathian forests.

We have compiled ten directions for an independent trip by car. Most routes are suitable for one day: you can leave Lviv in the morning, visit one or several locations, and return to the city in the evening.

1. Zhovkva

Zhovkva is one of the easiest options for a short trip from Lviv. The drive takes less than an hour, so you can go here even in the second half of the day.

The historic part of the town is compact: the main sights are located near the central square. Here you can see Zhovkva Castle, ancient churches, city gates, and Renaissance-era architecture.

Zhovkva Castle was built in the late 16th — early 17th century as a fortified residence.

Good for: a relaxed walk, a family trip, and getting acquainted with historic architecture.

Car: a compact city car is sufficient for the route.

2. Olesko Castle

Olesko Castle is located on a hill and is considered one of the most recognizable castles in Lviv Oblast. It is an architectural and historical monument of the 13th–18th centuries.

It is convenient to come here as a separate trip or include the castle in a larger route along the “Golden Horseshoe of Lviv Region.”

Set aside a few hours to explore the grounds and the exhibition. Before the trip, check the current museum opening hours.

Good for: lovers of history, architecture, and unhurried road trips.

3. Zolochiv Castle

Zolochiv Castle can be visited as a standalone destination or combined with Olesko and Pidhirtsi castles.

The three castles are often included in one classic one-day route. The distance between the main castles on the route is relatively small, so it is realistic to visit several sites in a day.

So that the trip does not turn into a race, it is better to choose two main castles in advance and leave the third as an additional stop.

Good for: a packed, all-day historical trip.

4. Pidhirtsi Castle

Pidhirtsi Castle attracts primarily with its architecture, location, and panoramic views. It is convenient to combine it with a trip to Olesko and Zolochiv.

5. Skole and the Skole Beskids

The park is located in the southern part of Lviv Oblast. Its territory is known for forests, mountain landscapes, springs, and tourist routes.

For a one-day trip, it is better to choose one specific location or a short route. A full-fledged hike will require more time and appropriate preparation.

Good for: a first trip to the Carpathians, a walk, and relaxing in nature.

Car: in summer, a regular passenger car is suitable. In bad weather and in winter, a crossover is more convenient.

6. Kamyanka Waterfall

Kamyanka Waterfall is located near the village of Dubyna, within the Skole Beskids National Park. It is one of the popular natural locations in Lviv Oblast.

From the parking area, part of the way usually has to be walked, so it is worth bringing comfortable shoes. After rain, the paths can be wet and slippery.

Near the waterfall, you can combine a walk with a picnic, but it is important to follow the national park rules and not leave trash behind.

Good for: a short walk, a trip with friends, and relaxing by the water.

Car: compact or crossover depending on the season and the condition of the access road.

7. Tustan

The road distance from Lviv is about 105–107 km.

It is best to allocate at least two to three hours to explore the complex and walk the routes. Comfortable shoes are required: part of the route goes along trails and stairs.

Tustan is located in the Skole Beskids area, so the trip can be combined with Skhidnytsia or other natural locations in the region.

Good for: an active walk, a family trip, and getting acquainted with the region’s history.

Car: a passenger car in dry weather, a crossover for a more comfortable trip in winter or after rains.

8. Skhidnytsia

Skhidnytsia is suitable for those who want to spend the day calmly: walk among the hills, visit the springs, and relax away from the big city.

The trip can be combined with Tustan; however, in this case it is better to leave Lviv early in the morning. A full day will be needed for both locations.

Skhidnytsia is located in a mountainous area, so the weather here may differ from Lviv’s. Before the trip, it is worth checking the forecast and bringing warm clothes even in the shoulder season.

9. Slavske

Because of the distance, the trip will take almost the whole day. It is better to leave in the morning and decide in advance which exact location you want to visit. Trying to cover several distant routes in one day will leave too little time for rest.

In winter, you should check road conditions and weather before departure. For a mountain route, seasonal tires and enough time are important.

Good for: an active day in the mountains and a winter trip.

Car: in the warm season, a passenger car is suitable; in winter, a crossover is preferable.

10. Dovbush Rocks

Dovbush Rocks is an option for those who are ready to combine a car trip with a longer walk. It is not just a viewpoint near the parking lot: to get to know the location, you will need comfortable shoes, water, and time.

The drive from Lviv and the walking part of the route take a significant part of the day, so it is better not to add too many additional stops.

Before the trip, check the weather. After rain, stones and forest trails can be slippery.

Good for: a hike, active recreation, and an all-day trip.

Car: a crossover will provide more comfort on regional and access roads, although in good weather the route is also accessible by a regular passenger car.
